  • Eligibility: Primarily available to 12th-grade students. However, community schools focusing on dropout prevention and recovery may enroll 11th-grade students in the ICO program.
  • Program Structure: Students receive specialized training aimed at obtaining a credential or a combination of credentials totaling 12 points within a specific industry cluster. This approach equips students with skills aligned with workforce demands.
  • Graduation Pathway: Earning industry credentials can serve as an alternative pathway to fulfill Ohio’s graduation requirements, especially for students who may face challenges with traditional assessments.

Pathfinder supports students in need of the Ohio Alternative Graduation Pathway – 12 Points is a flexible option designed to recognize students’ achievements in career and technical education, work-based learning, and other applied experiences as part of their journey to earn a high school diploma. Here’s how it works:

  • Competency-Based Recognition: Rather than solely relying on traditional academic credits, this pathway allows students to earn “points” for demonstrated competencies through industry certifications, work-based learning, internships, and other approved activities.
  • Earning the 12 Points: Each approved activity—such as completing a certification (for example, OSHA 10 or CPR/First Aid), participating in work-based learning experiences, or successfully completing an internship—is assigned a point value. Students accumulate these points until they reach the required total of 12 points, which counts toward graduation.
  • Real-World Skills & Readiness: This approach acknowledges the value of hands-on, practical experience and provides a pathway for students to showcase skills that directly align with workforce demands. It supports students who are pursuing career and technical education pathways, ensuring they are well-prepared for postsecondary education or immediate entry into the workforce.
  • Integration with Traditional Requirements: The Alternative Graduation Pathway is designed to complement the traditional curriculum by offering a meaningful, alternative route to graduation. It helps ensure that students meet all Ohio high school graduation requirements—including the 20-credit mandate—by integrating experiential learning and industry-recognized credentials into their academic portfolio.

Overall, the 12-point Alternative Graduation Pathway offers students a dynamic way to leverage their technical skills and real-world experiences as they work toward earning their high school diploma.
